1)What was the original purpose of opening the bookstore?
T: Opening the bookstore was a matter of “fate.” We’ve now reached a stage where it began quite naturally. The key words for my shop are “books, knowledge, connection” — that is, “books as a vessel for knowledge, creating connections.”
Knowledge itself carries a connective power. Common knowledge, philosophy, and psychology all speak to everyone and are worth sharing.
I’ve always been someone who keeps books close. When my secondary school friends came to the event, they all said my personality hadn’t changed much. I wanted to share, spread happiness, and share knowledge.
I like the things I like, and I hope others will like them too — or at least attract more people who like them. Sharing happiness and knowledge is related to people, and to everyone’s happiness, which in turn helps me too.
Books are also what I know best. They’re diverse, and they fit into the kind of space I love.
2) What kind of place is Flying Cloud Bookstore ?
(Bookstore, psychology clinic, or public event space?)
T: A psychology bookstore. If the space were bigger, we could keep the shop open while hosting events. We don’t turn away readers, but this place has more books on “people” and “the self,” as well as events that function as a public space.
Ideally, a larger mixed-use public space would be better — both for operations and for influence. Hong Kong is so cramped and expensive; if we could make it a little bigger, that would be great.
3)Are there any foreign bookstores the owners especially like?
T: The other shopkeepers probably have more ideas on this. Hong Kong independent bookstores usually pursue a humanistic, oasis-like approach rather than a spectacular or iconic one. I enjoy traveling less, though.
4)If you had to recommend one book to readers in Hong Kong, which would you choose, and why?
T: Should I just tell people to read the Heart Sutra? (thinks for a moment) In the end, I’d rather recommend books I personally love.
L: A book that should always be on the shelf?
T: Is there really a top ten book list in life? Not really... I think other bookstore owners might find this easier to answer. Should I really recommend the Heart Sutra? “Everyone is different, and it depends on the person.”
You read so many books in life — which ten influenced me the most? ... (deep in thought)
L: It seems this question needs to be revised....
5) Should we encourage reading books, or engaging with the wider world beyond books?
“Reading ten thousand books is not as good as traveling ten thousand miles?” I don’t believe that. Some people say the ideal is “travel ten thousand miles while reading ten thousand books.” It’s like the way scholars used to travel: reading while journeying, journeying while reading. But I’m definitely on the book side. You still have to visit exhibitions, touch the world, and reflect on the world as you go.
6)What have you learned from promoting the six major themes
(philosophical reflection, psychology and relationships, healing of body and mind, animal rights, arts and culture, and community connection)?
It naturally came together like a whole, and maybe there will be more themes in the future. It makes perfect sense — it’s all one organic whole! The people who opened this shop together all have this kind of character. It’s absolutely organic. I asked the previous owner why they opened a bookstore — what was the reason? There was no reason, just a stubborn desire to do it! It’s a vessel for love and dreams. It gives everyone a place to share, and Hong Kong needs that.
7) Please describe Flying Cloud Bookstore in three adjectives.
T: Cloud! Then... people! A book bar!
L: Huh? Those are nouns! We need adjectives — something that captures the bookstore's atmosphere more directly.
T: Comfortable, growing, loving.
